5 New Fall TV Shows I'll Be Watching

It was only a matter of time before they made a show about stalkers. Yes, it's September, which means fall primetime is back after a long summer of filler TV (what's up, final season of "True Blood") and terrible blockbuster movies (still crying because I miss Toby Maguire aka "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" was alright).
Thankfully, television returns in full force in just a matter of weeks. While I'm counting down the days until "Scandal" and "Homeland," here are five new shows I plan to check out (in order of how good I predict they'll be).
5. "Stalker" (CBS, Oct. 1)

The newest CBS police procedural is already garnering lofty critcism — and that's really no surprise. But if you're a "Law & Order: SVU" aficionado like me, then "Stalker" will be a welcome guilty pleasure in which you lie to your friends about watching. Maggie Q and Dylan McDermott (LOL remember "Hostage") star as unlikely partners in a special LAPD task force dedicated to investigating stalkers and unwelcome voyeurs. In all honesty, it's probably going to get canceled. But, you never know. Plus, Dylan McDermott really needs this, you guys.
4. "Mulaney" (Fox, Oct. 5)

I'll be the first to admit it: John Mulaney is the cutest. Sure, he's mentioned in his stand-up act that people have mistaken him for a small child, but that doesn't hinder his ability to crack me up with his earnest self-deprication. His semi-autobiographical comedy "Mulaney" has finally been given the green light, and while first impressions have dubbed it the new "Seinfeld," I'm going in with higher hopes. Take an hour to watch his stand-up special "New in Town" on Netflix and you'll see why. Also, Nasim Pedrad and Martin Short? Yes, please.
3. "A to Z" (NBC, Oct. 2)

I've had a crush on Ben Feldman ever since I watched that movie where Hilary Duff catfishes her mom and pretends to be Big from "Sex and the City" (I forget what it's called, but I swear that's a real movie). Anyway, Feldman is Hilary Duff's angsty, artsy love interest. Because NBC has smartly decided to post the pilot episode online, I've already got a mini review for this rom-com sitcom and it's basically this: Cristin Milioti and Feldman are painfully adorable together. The show will chronicle Adam and Zelda's (get it, A to Z) relationship from start to finish, like some kind of hybrid of "HIMYM" and "(500) Days of Summer." But the rom-com premise has been doing well for shows like the tragically underrated "The Mindy Project," so I have faith in NBC (for once).
2. "How to Get Away With Murder" (ABC, Sept. 25)

Um, Shonda Rhimes. Bye. Just kidding, I'll keep going (though there's really no need). Her latest creation stars Academy Award-nominated Viola Davis as a fierce/terrifying law professor looking for a few top students to take under her wing at a prestigious law firm. But shenanigans outside the classroom will most definitely ensue, presumably in the form of "Grey's Anatomy"-like melodrama and doozy-sized twists a la "Scandal." This will probably be the most tweeted-about new show of the season. In Shonda we trust.
1. "Gotham" (Fox, Sept. 22)

Origin stories are just the best. The reason Christopher Nolan's highly-praised "Batman" triology is so unforgettable is not only because his multi-layered heroes and villains were played by the best of the best (RIP Heath Ledger), but because he unearthed a whole intriguing universe in the form of Gotham. Well, Fox has hit the jackpot with their buzziest drama of the same name. Ben McKenzie (I miss "The O.C." always) aptly stars as a young James Gordon during the start of Gotham's dramatically increasing crime rate. We'll not only see a young Bruce Wayne in the mix, but also before-they-were-villains type arcs for infamous foes like the Penguin, the Riddler and Catwoman. This will definitely be the most anticipated new show of the 2014 fall season, and I'm fairly certain it'll be anything but a letdown. (Also, Donal Logue really deserves to be on a successfull TV show, just saying.)
